What this service covers.
Diffusion treatment involves heating a gemstone in the presence of colour-causing elements (chromium, titanium, or beryllium) so they migrate into the stone’s surface or bulk. The laboratory uses immersion microscopy and spectroscopic analysis to identify characteristic diffusion patterns.
Surface diffusion produces a shallow colour layer visible under immersion, while bulk diffusion (beryllium) penetrates the entire stone and requires chemical analysis for detection.
