Geographic origin determination combines inclusion study, spectroscopic fingerprinting, and LA-ICP-MS trace element chemistry. Each deposit leaves a characteristic chemical signature in the stones it produces – the laboratory compares the submitted stone’s profile against its reference database to reach an origin opinion.
Origin determination is most reliable for ruby, sapphire, emerald, and spinel, where the laboratory’s database coverage is most comprehensive. For other species, origin opinions may carry wider confidence ranges.
