We are recruiting diamond graders for ICA | GemLab India, our new laboratory in Surat, opening in 2026. Surat handles a substantial share of the world’s diamond cutting and polishing, and this is a chance to join a laboratory in that market from its first day.

The role

You will grade polished diamonds for colour, clarity, cut and carat weight, working under controlled lighting to a documented standard. Grading is checked between graders, and the reasoning behind a call is recorded alongside the result.

What you will do

  • Grade polished diamonds for the four Cs under controlled and repeatable conditions
  • Examine stones under the microscope to locate and plot inclusions
  • Record proportion and finish measurements, and check them against instrument output
  • Flag stones that need further analytical work, such as treatment or synthetic screening
  • Keep grading records and chain-of-custody documentation accurate
  • Take part in comparison grading to keep standards consistent between graders

What we are looking for

  • A recognised gemological qualification, or equivalent laboratory experience
  • Practical experience grading polished diamonds in a laboratory or trade setting
  • Confident use of a gemological microscope and standard grading equipment
  • Careful, consistent working habits and a willingness to have your calls checked
  • Written English sufficient to record findings clearly

Helpful, but not required

  • Experience with advanced instrumentation such as FTIR or UV-VIS-NIR
  • Familiarity with synthetic diamond screening
  • Gujarati or Hindi alongside English

About the laboratory

ICA | GemLab is an independent gemological laboratory specialising in the identification, origin determination, and treatment detection of coloured gemstones. We operate in source markets rather than purely consumer markets, document methodology alongside findings, and issue reports rather than certificates because gemology is not an exact science.

The Surat laboratory is our fourth facility, after Bangkok, Dubai and Hong Kong. It will be equipped to the same standard as our Bangkok headquarters and will work to the same analytical methodology.
