We are recruiting gemologists for ICA | GemLab India, our new laboratory in Surat, opening in 2026. The role covers the analytical work the laboratory is known for: identification, geographic origin determination, and treatment detection on coloured gemstones.
The role
You will examine specimens, run the analytical instruments, interpret the data, and write up findings. Our reports document the methodology alongside the result, so the reasoning behind a conclusion matters as much as the conclusion itself.
What you will do
- Identify gem materials and separate natural from synthetic and simulant
- Examine internal features under the microscope and record what they show
- Operate analytical instruments including LA-ICP-MS, EDXRF, Raman, UV-VIS-NIR and FTIR
- Interpret spectra and trace element data against reference material
- Contribute to origin determination using the laboratory’s reference database
- Write findings clearly, including the limits of what the analysis can support
- Work with the Bangkok laboratory on cases that need a second opinion
What we are looking for
- A recognised gemological qualification, or a science degree with laboratory gemology experience
- Hands-on experience with coloured gemstone identification
- Comfort operating and maintaining analytical instrumentation
- The judgement to say when a question cannot be answered conclusively
- Clear written English
Helpful, but not required
- Experience with origin determination or trace element interpretation
- Published research, or a record of contributing to it
- Gujarati or Hindi alongside English
About the laboratory
ICA | GemLab is an independent gemological laboratory specialising in the identification, origin determination, and treatment detection of coloured gemstones. We operate in source markets rather than purely consumer markets, document methodology alongside findings, and issue reports rather than certificates because gemology is not an exact science.
The Surat laboratory is our fourth facility, after Bangkok, Dubai and Hong Kong. It will be equipped to the same standard as our Bangkok headquarters and will work to the same analytical methodology.
