We are recruiting jewellery graders for ICA | GemLab India, our new laboratory in Surat, opening in 2026. The role covers finished pieces rather than loose stones, where the mount constrains what can be measured and the report has to be honest about that.

The role

You will assess mounted stones and complete pieces, working out what can be established without unsetting and documenting the limits of the examination where they exist.

What you will do

  • Examine mounted stones and record what the setting allows you to determine
  • Estimate weight and dimensions for stones that cannot be removed
  • Assess multi-stone pieces, including matched suites and pavé work
  • Identify metals and note hallmarks and maker’s marks where present
  • Document each piece photographically before and after examination
  • State clearly in the record where a mount prevents a conclusive finding
  • Work with gemologists on pieces needing analytical instrumentation

What we are looking for

  • A recognised gemological qualification, or equivalent trade experience with finished jewellery
  • Experience assessing mounted stones and multi-stone pieces
  • Confident microscope work in the constrained conditions a setting imposes
  • Care in handling valuable client property
  • Clear written English

Helpful, but not required

  • Metal testing or hallmarking experience
  • Gemstone photography
  • Gujarati or Hindi alongside English

About the laboratory

ICA | GemLab is an independent gemological laboratory specialising in the identification, origin determination, and treatment detection of coloured gemstones. We operate in source markets rather than purely consumer markets, document methodology alongside findings, and issue reports rather than certificates because gemology is not an exact science.

The Surat laboratory is our fourth facility, after Bangkok, Dubai and Hong Kong. It will be equipped to the same standard as our Bangkok headquarters and will work to the same analytical methodology.
