How AI supports our testing workflow

Since merging with GAIA Scientific, previously our technology partner, we have applied AI across the testing workflow and the laboratory’s daily operations. This post explains what that changes for a stone submitted to us, and what it does not.

What it changed

The number of checks a stone passes before a conclusion is issued has changed by an order of magnitude. They run alongside the analytical techniques applied to the stone and support the gemologist who makes the final call.

What does not change

The AI does not issue findings. Identification, treatment detection and origin determination still rest on instrument data, microscopy and a gemologist’s interpretation of both. Several techniques are applied in tandem on each stone, because no single measurement answers every question.

Origin determination in particular remains interpretive. More checks make it easier to see when the evidence is consistent and when it is not. They do not turn an uncertain case into a certain one, and where the data cannot support a conclusion, the report says so.

Why it matters for turnaround

Automating supporting checks has removed redundant steps from the process. In most cases, turnaround depends on laboratory capacity rather than on the analytical process itself, which is why we are also adding capacity in new markets.
